Lovers of the Automation of the first hour are undoubtedly still very attached to the Z-Wave protocol. Myself, although I test and use many devices ZigBee whether at the domo-lab or more generally at home, I always have a large part of my house which is in Z-Wave. Unfortunately, the home automation protocol king was quickly dethroned by the Zigbee.
The main reason for this fall was mainly economic. Because Z-Wave and ZigBee are very close in many respects. It is also said of them that they are cousins, but it is actually almost the case. Both protocols have everything expected of a home automation protocol. From smart mesh networking to status feedback to high range and security. The only real difference is ultimately in the cost of the devices as well as the variety of choices. The price is undoubtedly the major argument. From 3 to 4 times depending on the device, a size difference therefore.
With the emergence of Zigbee, many brands have abandoned Z-Wave in favor of it. A few diehards like fibaro continue to offer Z-Wave home automation devices, unfortunately, at ever higher rates. Indeed, since the takeover of Fibaro by Nice, the prices of the brand’s peripherals have seen the already significant prices revised upwards. So although very qualitative, consumers have no choice but to turn to Zigbee. What if the situation changed with Zooz?
Z-Wave is not dead, the resistance is on
Fortunately, thanks to Zooz, the Z-wave seems to be reborn with actors who are involved in making this powerful home automation protocol finally accessible. This is what the brand offers, which offers a very interesting and accessible Z-Wave range!
Indeed, the range offers several small sensors quite close to what offers Aqara in ZigBee, both in terms of design and prices. It is indeed a great revolution to finally see a manufacturer offering Z-Wave peripherals that challenge the most widespread Zigbee peripherals.
With discrete peripherals and a reasonable price range, there is no doubt that Z-Wave should regain interest among many users. Having taken control of the range, I am already very satisfied with the quality of the design.
Zooz Z-Wave Device Details
The opening detector
The Zooz opening detection module, in the center of the photo, is much more discreet than the Sonoff Zigbee module. A little wider than the Aqara module but much thinner.
From the inside, we see that the module is able to operate in opening detection both on its right and on its left. Convenient to install, therefore, to place the detector more easily.
The temperature probe
The temperature and humidity probe has a seal on the lid, which allows it to work both indoors and outdoors. Very practical, the probe is also able to operate over a wide temperature range between -15°C and 4°C. Perfect for monitoring temperature and humidity in the garden or in a Z-wave greenhouse.
The tilt/shock sensor
The shock and tilt sensor is also very thin. As big as the opening detector. The inclination detection makes it a detector that can be used to monitor the state of a garage door or a bay window more easily than the opening detector allows. It is therefore an interesting and discreet alternative, especially given the price of the module.
The flood detector
The flood detector uses the same principle as that offered by other sensors of the same type such as that of Fibaro. With the difference that the Zooz flood detector has 4 detectors against 3 on the Fibaro but above all has an extremely small size compared to the Fibaro module.
The motion detector
The latter does not stop at the detection of movements, it is also able to follow the temperature, the luminosity and the humidity. All for less than 40€ in Z-wave!
The universal relay
The universal relay module is also very interesting. The latter offers multiple capacities for less than €40. Also equipped with a Z-Wave 700 chip which allows it to inherit the many advantages of Z-Wave, the latter is also very flexible. Powered on a low current, the supply voltage must be between 12 and 24V, which leaves the choice.
Equipped with two independent relays, these are sized so as to be able to control a load such as a motor or a swimming pool pump. The possibilities are numerous and we will have the opportunity to see this module in detail through a dedicated guide because it already has a very specific use planned at home.
The inclusion and support of Z-Wave Zooz modules with Jeedom
The inclusion of z-wave modules remain unchanged, it simply happens from the Z-Wave plugin under Jeedom. As you can see I still have a lot of z-wave devices around the house, this protocol is still a great protocol. That’s why we welcome this new zwave Zooz range.
Zooz devices have a z-wave plus chip, so they are perfectly compatible with the secure inclusion mode offered by the protocol.
Once in inclusion mode at the home automation server level, all you have to do is open the device to be included and perform 3 quick presses on the button next to the battery.
In a few seconds, a window will appear, this is your new Zooz Z-Wave device, all you have to do is assign a room and a name to it to start using it.
The commands of the Z-Wave Zooz modules are numerous, each module has a lot of information under Jeedom. Several are not useful for display, so some controls should be hidden, but this once again confirms the quality and performance of this brand new Z-wave range.
Zooz Range Compatibility
This range is compatible with most current home automation systems. Eedomus, Jeedom Home Assistant… If you choose to use these peripherals with a system other than an Eedomus or a Jeedom Atlas (z-wave), both natively equipped with a Z-wave controller (this can also be a Jeedom Smart Z-wave). But if you’re using a system that doesn’t have a Z-wave controller, I recommend going with Aeotec’s Gen5 controller. This is the most efficient of the controllers which even has a reserve of energy to carry out inclusion as close as possible to the modules!
Our impression of this new Zooz range after getting started
Happy to see the Z-Wave protocol return to the forefront of the home automation scene with finally affordable prices, we were also very satisfied with the quality of the products in this range as well as the performance offered. It is clearly the return of the king protocol, we now hope to see other products complete this range and especially other brands to follow the same model!
Finally, what about the prices displayed which are simply unpublished on Z-wave!
